Pet Adoption Day

On Saturday, March 30 from 9 AM to 12 PM at the Governor’s Mansion, First Lady Marty Kemp will host a pet adoption day for rescue cats and dogs. Mrs. Kemp has partnered with Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black, and several humane societies, animal shelters, and pet rescues across the state to find permanent homes for animals in need.

“The Kemps are excited to open our home to promote pet adoption and find forever homes for rescue cats and dogs,” said First Lady Marty Kemp. “Our family has always held a special place in our hearts for animals, so we are thrilled to have so many state and local partners ready to join us in this important initiative.”

Commissioner Gary Black will be with the First Lady at the adoption day. Visitors at the Mansion will also have the opportunity to visit with the Georgia Grown mascot, Georgie, at the event.

“We are excited for this upcoming event and the exposure that it will bring to pets in need of forever homes. The Georgia Department of Agriculture shares the First Lady’s passion for animals, and we are proud to partner with her in this endeavor,” said Commissioner Gary Black.

Anyone can easily register for this adoption event through the First Lady’s website. There are three one-hour time slots offered to visit with the pets available for adoption. All adoption fees and documentation will be handled by the humane societies, shelters, and rescues in attendance. The Atlanta Humane Society and Lowndes County Animal Shelterwill be two of the organizations at the event.

“The Atlanta Humane Society is honored to partner with the First Lady of Georgia for this pet adoption event,” said Cal Morgan, President and CEO of the Atlanta Humane Society. “We will be able to raise awareness of the homeless pets in our state and increase the numbers of animals being adopted into loving homes, including many who will find homes at this event.”

“Communities across Georgia face similar challenges related to caring for homeless pets. Each year, rescues, shelter personnel, and independent volunteers spend countless hours securing resources to care for an ever expanding pet population. The opportunity to highlight the plight of these animals at the state level is invaluable to the efforts of those dedicated to the cause,” said Paige Dukes, Lowndes County. “We are thrilled to be a part of Pet Adoption Day at the Governor’s Mansion, and we are forever grateful to First Lady Kemp for her ongoing efforts to help those that cannot help themselves. Through education and awareness, we can provide a better future for pets and the people that care for them.”

Tea Party Anniversary

Grand Old Partisan honors Rick Santelli. This day of February 19, 2009, the CNBC analyst denounced the ruinous Obama policy agenda. His epic words encouraged millions of Americans to organize the Tea Party movement:

“The government is promoting bad behavior.

We’re thinking of having a Chicago Tea Party in July. All you capitalists that want to show up to Lake Michigan, I’m gonna start organizing.

These guys are pretty straight forward, and my guess is, a pretty good statistical cross-section of America, the silent majority. You know, they’re pretty much of the notion that you can’t buy your way into prosperity, and if the multiplier that all of these Washington economists are selling us is over one… that we never have to worry about the economy again. ‘The government should spend a trillion dollars an hour because we’ll get 1.5 trillion back.’

I’ll tell you what, if you read our founding fathers, people like Benjamin Franklin and Jefferson… What we’re doing in this country now is making them roll over in their graves.”

New App for Youth in Crisis

Gov. Kemp, State Leaders Announce Smartphone App for Youth in Crisis

February 14, 2019

Atlanta, GA – Today, Governor Brian P. Kemp, First Lady Marty Kemp, and state officials announced a new mobile application to support the Georgia Crisis and Access Line (GCAL), a 24/7 hotline offering free and confidential access to services for mental illness, substance use disorders, and intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“Traveling across the state, Marty and I have heard firsthand from parents, students, teachers, and administrators about the growing mental health crisis in our schools and communities. That’s why we’re taking action to fund mental health intervention services, school security measures, and innovative tools like the My GCAL app,” stated Governor Kemp. “I applaud the hard work of Commissioner Fitzgerald and the Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Disabilities to build this resource for our state and lend a helping hand to those in need.”

The My GCAL app – for Apple and Android smartphones – was designed to reach Georgia’s youth in times of need, and GCAL is staffed by caring professionals – including licensed clinicians – who are available 24/7 to address behavioral health crises, make referrals for treatment, and dispatch mobile crisis response teams.

“Right now, Georgia’s youth face tremendous pressure to ‘fit in’ with their peers, and it can take a severe emotional and physical toll on their day-to-day lives,” stated First Lady Marty Kemp. “As the parents of three teenage daughters, Brian and I understand that Georgia families face this challenge every single day. We’re committed to standing with them in this fight.”

At today’s announcement, Governor Kemp and the First Lady were joined by DBHDD Commissioner Judy Fitzgerald; State Representatives Sharon Cooper (R – Marietta), Katie Dempsey (R – Rome), Terry Rogers (R – Clarkesville), and Kevin Tanner (R – Dawsonville); and State Senators Chuck Hufstetler (R – Rome), Brian Strickland (R – McDonough), and Blake Tillery (R – Vidalia).

“We know that when youth may be struggling or have a friend who needs help, they are much more likely to reach out via text rather than phone,” stated Commissioner Fitzgerald. “This app provides the same professional, confidential response as the GCAL Call Center through a method that works for teens. We hope that it will become a lifeline for youth seeking help.”

The app enables users to receive immediate support by communicating with caring GCAL professionals via text message, chat, or phone. While the My GCAL app is targeted at youth, GCAL is available to anyone in Georgia.

The Georgia Crisis and Access Line

The Georgia Crisis and Access Line (GCAL) is a 24/7 behavioral health crisis call center operated by Behavioral Health Link through funding from the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities. GCAL provides free and confidential behavioral health crisis intervention and access to behavioral health services. Anyone in Georgia can call GCAL for help for themselves or on behalf of someone else at 800-715-4225 or via the My GCAL app. Callers actively experiencing a crisis can speak with live clinicians trained in de-escalation. When needed, GCAL can dispatch mobile crisis response teams to provide de-escalation on-site. GCAL information specialists can also provide referrals for treatment in a caller’s area.

The Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) is the state agency that supports people with mental health needs, substance use disorders, and intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our vision is easy access to high-quality care that leads to a life of recovery and independence for the people we serve. Judy Fitzgerald has served as commissioner of DBHDD since 2016.
